Why Act Regionally?

Opportunity
Over half of the region’s workers are employed in a jurisdiction other than the one in which they live. This mobility allows residents to have a wide range of housing and employment opportunities. It also allows employers to draw employees from a deeper talent pool.

Similarly, nearly one third of all non-work trips taken in Hampton Roads - errands, entertainment, recreation, etc. - are taken outside of an individual’s home jurisdiction. This is due in large part to the great variety and quantity of high quality amenities, museums, theme parks, shopping centers and the like, from the Oceanfront to Williamsburg and everywhere in between. Some credit is due to the significant level of tourism our region attracts. However, few of the attractions would thrive without cross locality visitation from within Hampton Roads.

These choices in work and recreation - and the ability to take advantage of them via an efficient transportation system - are the essence of prosperity and a high quality of life. Our standard of living would be impossible outside a regional context. So we’re not simply more competitive economically because we live regionally, we’re better off for it too.

We already live this way - so why not do things better and more efficiently together.
