Regional Spotlight:
Hampton Roads Research Partnership (HRRP)
The Hampton Roads Research Partnership is a consortium of seven academic institutions, two federal research and technology laboratories, and a research institute in Hampton Roads, Virginia. It is funded by its members and the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, which supports the HRRP-University Center as part of its University Center Program.
Research Partnership members recognize the competitive power achieved by leveraging the intellectual and physical infrastructure capabilities of the ten institutions allowing them to compete for and obtain more research grants and other monies, a valuable engine for economic development.
Approximately 2000 scientists and engineers are affiliated with HRRP member institutions. Researchers have access to state of the art equipment and facilities. Creatively applying these capabilities to appropriate technology focus or cluster areas will lead to significantly increased research funding, and eventually to increased regional prosperity, through high technology business development. Research collaborations are currently underway or planned in Sensors, Modeling and Simulation, and Biotechnology and Atmospheric Science. The collaborations have a wide variety of applications, including homeland security and inter-modal transportation.
Regional businesses are encouraged to participate in these activities and to help in the transfer of new technologies to the commercial market..
