|2010: Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy: Vision Hampton Roads - Approach|
Hampton Roads’ approach to the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) process is to leverage and align existing regional organizations to provide both leadership and support. In order to ensure an effective and efficient process, consulting assistance is used from an organization experienced in CEDS planning.
A group of regional leaders and representatives is committed to serve on the Strategy Committee to provide direction and oversight. The Hampton Roads Partnership (HRP), chartered in 1996 to “focus on the region's strategic issues for the purpose of enhancing our competitiveness in the global economy with resulting income and job growth for our citizens,” is the lead organization. Comprised of the chief elected officials of seventeen communities, private sector, education, military, and labor representation from both South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Peninsula, HRP is the logical lead for the planning effort. The Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC), Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance (HREDA), Hampton Road Research Partnership (HRRP), Hampton Roads Technology Council and Technology Incubator (HRTC/HRTI), and two workforce organizations, Opportunity Inc (Opp.inc) and Peninsula Council for Workforce Development (PCWD) have important roles as well. We will be drawing on a significant amount of existing material.
